“You’re sure you didn’t cater this?” Kai asked for the third time.

I was starting to get annoyed. “I’m sure.”

The rest of the table laughed at his teasing. They were enthralled with Kai. He could say anything, and they would ooh and ah. A god among mortals.

Maybe that was the real reason I was annoyed. I didn’t like how nice he was to my friends, when he’d been nothing but difficult with me.

“You guys don’t understand,” he told them, “Clo could barely make a frozen pizza when I knew her. That she made this entire meal tonight is mind blowing.”

“River helped,” I added quickly.

“I chopped green onions and stirred rice. You’re right, I deserve all the credit.” She grinned at me, sensing my irritation.

Kai laughed easily, his deep rumble filling the room with warmth. “I like you, River. You’re funny.”

The arches of her high cheekbones turned pink with the compliment, but she just shrugged. “I like you too, Kai. Clover doesn’t appreciate my sense of humor.”

“You two are adorable,” I murmured to my stir-fry green beans.

“Are you back and forth between cities a lot while on tour?” Maya asked Kai but included Brennan too.

They shared a look. “Not usually.” Brennan sighed. “We typically stick to the bus and the schedule.”

“Don’t be sour,” Kai scolded. “This is better than the bus and you know it.” He stabbed another meatball. “And so much better than fast food for the hundred and sixtieth night in a row.”

Brennan looked up, his slicked back hair glinting in the light from my Moroccan star pendant. “It certainly smells nicer.”

“Do you always travel with them?” Adam asked. He reached beneath the table and grabbed my hand, squeezing it in his bigger one.

Soft—the thought came unbidden. My memory tickled with the rough feeling of Kai’s calloused palms and finger pads on my bare skin. Adam didn’t have hardened calluses from years of practice and playing and hard use. I didn’t know why the comparison bothered me, but it did.

I looked at him and smiled, tucking a stray strand of hair away from his forehead. He smiled back, the look in his eyes adoring. Trusting. Safe.

Brennan released a deep sigh, toying with the meatball on his plate. “Not always.”

“Always,” Kai argued.

“No, that’s not true.”

Kai lifted a challenging eyebrow. “Name one tour you didn’t babysit us on.”

“When the twins were born,” Brennan answered immediately. “I was with Isabella.”

“No, you were with us in Phoenix and when Isabella went into labor you had to catch that red eye. You nearly missed the whole thing.” Kai tugged on his beard, in thought. “I remember because when I stopped by your house to congratulate her after we got back, she told me off in Spanish for a solid ten minutes.” He clicked his tongue against back of his teeth. “She scarred me and the twins for life.”

Brennan made a face. “Well, I wasn’t going to miss the Mesa.”

Kai smiled and held out his hand, rocking it back and forth. “But the birth of your twins? Eh… take it or leave it.
